RADON TESTING SERVICES

Prism Inspection is a certified NRSB-EPA (National Radon Safety Board) Measurement Specialist.

Prism InspectClick To Enlargeion offers short term radon testing services. The short term tests are for real estate transactions. This test is an unobtrusive passive device that will take only 48 hours to complete. The results are given to you immediately after the test.

While Prism Inspection does not offer radon mitigation, elevated radon levels are easily correctable with remediation which also typically controls moisture, mold and mildew. This is an added benefit for those who suffer from these allergies. The cost of remediation depends on how your home was built and other factors. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs, like painting or having a new hot water heater installed. The average cost for mitigation ranges from $500.00 to about $2000.00.

WHAT IS RADON?

Radon is an invisible gas that the environmental protection agency considers the # 1 toxic pollutant in the home today. Radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 deaths per year -- however, this number could range from 8,000 to 45,000 deaths per year. The numbers of deaths from other causes are taken from the 1999 National Safety Council reports. The EPA suggests that every homeowner  have their home tested for radon. The EPA has developed a Risk Chart that shows how elevated levels of radon in your home relates to lung cancer. The FHA has required a Revised Inspection Form to Include Mandatory Radon Info

CENTRAL VIRGINIA

One in four homes in Central Virginia has elevated radon levels as compared to one in fifteen nationally. This is an alarming fact that is not going away. Since this odorless gas causes lung cancer second only to smoking, the only smart thing to do to protect your family, is to test your home to see if you are at risk.

EPA Map of Radon Zones

VIRGINIA

The U.S. EPA and the U.S. Geological Survey have evaluated the radon potential in the U.S. and have developed this map is to assist National, State, and local organizations to target their resources and to assist building code officials in deciding whether radon-resistant features are applicable in new construction. This map is not intended to be used to determine if a home in a given zone should be tested for radon. Homes with elevated levels of radon have been found in all three zones. All homes should be tested regardless of geographic location. The map assigns each of the 3,141 counties in the U.S. to one of three zones based on radon potential. Each zone designation reflects the average short-term radon measurement that can be expected to be measured in a building without the implementation of radon control methods. The radon zone designation of the highest priority is Zone 1.

zone 1 Zone 1 Highest Potential (greater than 4 pCi/L)
zone 2 Zone 2 Moderate Potential (from 2 to 4 pCi/L)
zone 3 Zone 3 Low Potential (less than 2 pCi/L)
